Another testimony about life
Two years ago we were sent to start a church in New Orleans, a city as broken as you can imagine. We lived and worked in the part of the city which was most hit by Hurricane Katrina and so are the people there. We started giving food and clothes out, walked through the neighborhood praying and building relationships one by one.
One day we met Drina, she lived with her sister and sometimes other people in an unstable home. Their living room looked like a big garbage can. Her family was spread out by Katrina. Her three daughters ( between 16 and 21) were all living either with other relatives or on their own already. Sometimes Drina took care of her two little granddaughters.
It took a while for Drina to open up. She had some rough experiences in her life and she had learned to live with it. But she started to tell stories and our relationship grew. She always respected me and she even started to ask me sometimes for advice.
When a hurricane hit the area again and the city was evacuated, we took care of her dog and 4 puppies, because they couldn’t take the dogs to the shelter. We also helped the whole time always with food and clothes.
Shortly after coming back from the evacuation their house burned down. They lost everything again.
A few weeks after this she came to the church and was very nervous. She told me she was pregnant and could not keep that child. She said it was impossible. She was too old at 40, she did not want the pregnancy, and she would abort the child.
But in telling me this I knew she was crying for help. Without thinking I told her not to worry. We would find a place for this child. I told her I would talk immediately to my Senior Pastors and we would help to find a home. And if nobody could be found, we would take the baby. She would be the mom, but we would take care of everything.
I told her she was not a bad mother if she would do this. The opposite. She was great mom and we would raise the child telling him about his mom with respect and love. I told her we would take financial care of this child and it would be alright. I urged her to endure the pregnancy, to trust God and us and not to worry.
The same day I called my Pastors and it didn’t take long before a young couple said they would love to take the child. What a great miracle. Drina was visibly touched when I told her the news. She decided not to abort the child. Later she found out that she will have a baby boy. She was thrilled. She also had found a better place to stay.
A few weeks later she told me she would keep the baby herself and she was happy. I believe this baby is alive and now very welcome because we were willing to provide a home for him. It was possible because we trusted God for a way and we were willing to do the work. And Drina could trust us because she had already experienced that we care!
The baby was born on August 17th. Drina is a proud mother of her first boy. She called me immediately, joyful and happy. She knows that God has given her this son.
